If you’re looking for an active day out, the Wanchi Crater Lake and its surroundings make an excellent choice. The extinct volcano, which reaches a height of 3386m, is famed for its beautiful scenery and there are plenty of options to explore by foot, boat and horse.
The crater contains a large lake, hot mineral springs, waterfalls, beautiful valleys and farmland. There is an old monastery with a church situated on one of the lake islands.

Day 1 - Ambo and Wanchi Crater DayTour (L)
You will be met on arrival at Bole International Airport, or at your hotel. Drive 125 km west of Addis Ababa towards Ambo, passing through the Gefersa Water Reservoir. The crater lies between Ambo and Weliso, from Ambo we journey to the volcanic crater lake Wenchi on a gravel road, ascending the mountain slopes almost to the rim of the extinct crater where the height reaches 3386m at its peak. You can hike the 4 km to the lake shore on your own or descend on horseback. We will return to Addis Ababa via Weliso
Wanchi is located at equal distance between the towns of Ambo and Woliso. The volcano has a 4 by 4.8 km (2.5 by 3.0 mi) wide caldera, and a single crater lake, Wanchi lake, about 450 m (1,480 ft) below the rim of the volcano
Ambo is a spa town is known for its mineral water, which is bottled outside of town; it is reportedly the most popular brand in Ethiopia.
